From Out of Space

A collection devoted to meteorites, tektites, impact materials and other specimens connected to events beyond our planet.

Meteorites are fragments of asteroids, and occasionally other planetary bodies, that survived their passage through Earth’s atmosphere and reached the ground. Their textures and mineral structures preserve evidence of processes that began long before the rocks of Earth took their present form.

Tektites are natural glasses formed on Earth when the immense heat and pressure of a meteorite impact melted and ejected terrestrial material. As the molten material travelled through the atmosphere, it cooled into distinctive forms—each shaped by a moment of extraordinary energy.

This collection may also include impactites and other carefully selected materials associated with meteorite impacts. Each listing will identify the specimen, known locality, dimensions and available provenance as accurately as possible. Natural surface features, weathering and variations are part of each specimen’s individual history.
