A small parcel of natural Australian tektite chips, offered as a genuine piece of impact history.
The supplied collector’s note identifies these as Australites (Australian tektites), “chips only,” self-collected in 1980 north-west of the Nullarbor Plains, Western Australia. The note also refers to an impact event approximately 700,000 years ago; modern references broadly place Australites within the Australasian tektite event at roughly 610,000–800,000 years old.
Tektites are natural silica-rich glass formed when a large meteorite or asteroid impact melts terrestrial rock and ejects the molten material high into the atmosphere. As that melt cools and falls back to Earth, it forms distinctive impact glass. Australites are the Australian members of the wider Australasian tektite strewn field.
This parcel contains irregular, unpolished chips with charcoal-grey to black surfaces, metallic-looking highlights and natural impact textures. These are rough fragments rather than rare button-shaped collector specimens.
