A natural fragment of Darwin Glass from western Tasmania.
This 2 g specimen is recorded on the supplied purchase note as Darwin Glass (impact glass), associated with Darwin Crater, Zeehan, Tasmania.
Darwin Glass formed when the extreme heat and pressure of a meteorite or asteroid impact melted silica-rich terrestrial material, which cooled rapidly into natural glass. The Darwin impact event is generally placed at approximately 816,000 years ago. Unlike tektites that travelled through the atmosphere and landed far from their source, Darwin Glass is generally classified as an impact glass / impactite associated with the local crater environment.
Natural Darwin Glass can range from translucent to opaque, with dark green, charcoal, brown and olive tones. Vesicles, flow textures and irregular molten-looking surfaces are part of its natural character. This piece displays a dark grey-green body with a lighter translucent glassy band and visible natural vesicles.
