A connection to ancient oceans

Brittle stars are relatives of sea stars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Although often called “starfish” in fossil listings, they belong to a separate group. Their living relatives have a distinct central disc and flexible arms. The wider starfish-and-brittle-star lineage has a fossil record extending back more than 480 million years.

Comparable Moroccan specimens are commonly attributed to Ordovician marine deposits. If that comparison is correct for this piece, it predates the first dinosaurs by more than 200 million years.
