Knightia Fossil Fish Plate — Wyoming, 7.5 cm

A small window into an ancient freshwater world. This golden-brown fish fossil rests in a pale stone plate, with delicate skeletal details offering a glimpse of life in Wyoming around 52 million years ago.

Identified on its accompanying supplier card as Knightia eocaena, this small relative of modern herrings lived in the lakes of the Eocene Green River Formation. Knightia swam in schools and is Wyoming’s state fossil.
