A little spiral from Scotland's ancient seas. This approximately 3 cm ammonite remains nestled in its natural rock matrix, where its ribbed whorls give the fossil a sculptural, tactile character.
Ammonites were marine cephalopods related to squid. Their coiled shells contained chambers that helped them regulate buoyancy. Ammonites occur in Jurassic rocks across Scotland, including the Inner Hebrides, but this specimen's precise collecting locality, geological formation, age and species were not supplied and have not been independently confirmed.
The natural matrix has irregular edges and surface textures. Please examine the original-condition photograph for the specimen's exact appearance. Some gallery images have an artistically replaced background and may vary in fine surface detail.
