Story

Rare circular geology from Western Australia

This one-of-one cut display slab is identified on the supplied note as Orbicular Granite — Boogardie, W.A. Its long, tapered silhouette exposes pale cream grey granite crossed by dark green black mineral bands and orbicular textures an unusual, graphic record of ancient igneous processes.

Boogardie Orbicular Granite is a rare ornamental stone from near Mount Magnet. Geological references describe the orbicules as concentrically layered accumulations in a granitic matrix and place the Boogardie formation at approximately 2.692 billion years old. That geological age refers to the locality and formation; this individual piece has not been laboratory dated.

The specimen is a slender, sculptural slab with natural irregular edges and a beautiful contrast between light matrix and dark mineral patterning. Display it on a shelf, desk, plinth or in a natural-history collection.
