Ancient shell mosaic
A one-of-one Wyoming shell fossil slab with a dense field of spiral shell cross-sections preserved through a dark blue-grey mineral matrix. Commonly marketed in the lapidary trade as ‘Turritella agate’, this material is more accurately described as fossiliferous silica or chalcedony containing fossil freshwater gastropods; the trade name comes from the shells’ tall spiral forms.
The supplied note records Wyoming, USA. This style of fossil material is often associated with Eocene lake deposits of the Green River Formation, but the exact formation, locality and species for this specimen have not been supplied. The listing therefore presents it as a collector specimen with the provenance stated on the note, rather than as a laboratory-certified scientific identification.
The cut face reveals dozens of cream, tan and pale shell forms set against a charcoal-to-blue-grey matrix. Natural irregular edges and the rough reverse side keep the piece tactile and geological. At 140 g, it makes a striking display piece for a shelf, cabinet, desk or natural-history collection.
