Story

A genuine Calymene trilobite fossil from Morocco, dating to the Silurian Period approximately 443–419 million years ago.

Trilobites were extinct marine arthropods that inhabited ancient seas for hundreds of millions of years. The name trilobite refers to the three longitudinal lobes running along the body: a raised central axis flanked by two side lobes. Their hard, calcified exoskeleton was divided into a head, segmented thorax and tail shield, providing protection while allowing movement across the sea floor.

Calymene is a classic trilobite form, recognised for its strongly segmented body and rounded outline. Like many trilobites, it could curl or enrol its body as a defence against predators—similar in principle to a modern woodlouse.

These specimens come from Morocco, where extensive Palaeozoic marine rocks preserve a remarkably diverse record of ancient ocean life. Careful mechanical preparation is often required to expose the fossil from its surrounding stone matrix.

Two specimens are available. Each is naturally different in shape, preservation, matrix and visible detail. The price is for one specimen.
