Coprolites are fossilised droppings: trace fossils that preserve evidence of an animal’s behaviour rather than its body. They formed when waste was buried and mineralised before it could fully decay, leaving a stone record of an ancient moment.
Some specimens preserve fragments such as bone, scales, plant material or other inclusions. When these features are genuinely present and properly studied, they can offer clues about diet and the ecosystem in which the animal lived. A specimen’s shape alone, however, is rarely enough to identify the exact animal that produced it.
This collection is intended for coprolites associated with dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, including smaller vertebrates. Attribution is treated carefully: an individual listing will identify a possible producer only when the available locality, geological context, published comparison or documented provenance supports it.
Coprolites vary greatly in size, shape, colour, texture and mineral composition. Cracks, worn surfaces and irregular forms are part of their geological history. Photographs and measurements are provided so that each specimen can be considered on its own character.
Where known, listings state the locality, geological formation, estimated age, dimensions, weight, preparation or stabilisation, provenance notes and whether the photographs show the exact item supplied. Undocumented details are left unknown rather than filled by assumption.
